It used to be Korea’s standard in music videos to produce everything in a large studio with a fancy backdrop, a couple of interesting props, and some backup dancers. I mean, it probably is somewhat the standard, but with BTS, Blackpink, and other popular Korean artists hitting global fame lately, Korea has shown a major upgrade in their video production game. If you look at Lee Suhyun’s newest music video ‘Alien’, the production team has integrated a lot of animation in the music video, adding to the aesthetic and production value. A nice touch in my opinion!
Lately, we’ve seen Korean music video footage shot at actual locations outside of fancy warehouses/studios. Of course, that requires a larger budget. If you look at Blackpink’s music video ‘Ice Cream’ featuring Selena Gomez, you can see the increase in production quality. HOWEVER, the production or label still couldn’t afford a unification of Blackpink and Selena Gomez to shoot together. But that’s probably because Korean labels rob most of the money from artists, but that’s also a whole other topic. Checkout Blackpink’s ‘Ice Cream’ music video below to see what I meant from this whole topic…
